QUAGOS JACK landed a second major title with victory in the BetGoodwin Bedfordshire Sprint at Henlow on Sunday.

Shaded in the betting for the GBGB Category Two competition by his trial stakes conqueror and fastest first-round winner Salthill Sniper (Ron Peckover), a slick exit from the September 2020 son of Kilmore Lemon and Barnfield Ten saw him take advantage of a stumble on the run-up from his chief rival before securing that an all-important first-bend lead, after which he was on his way to success in the £3,000 event.

Racing away as his rivals crowded in behind, Quagos Jack crossed the line two and three-quarter lengths clear of Salthill Sniper, who just shaded Kilara Elk (Carol Weatherall) for the runner-up spot. The winning time for the 277m trip was 16.53sec (normal).

Winner of the MWD Partnership Sprint Grand Final at Yarmouth’s East Anglian Derby festival, Quagos Jack was improving his fantastic record to 20 wins from 35 starts with success in the Bedfordshire Sprint. However, the record books will show the winning trainer to be Keith Dawson and not the holidaying Kevin Quinton, as James Chalkley, director of racing at Henlow, explained.

“Kevin was on holiday for the final so switched the dog to Keith who effectively handled him for the final – and won it!” said Chalkley. “The two are good friends and, as far as I understand, might even be joint-breeders of Quagos Jack, so it’s been very much a joint success – and a deserved one.

“Quagos Jack has such a great overall record and, while he been beaten twice here in a trial stakes and then the heats, was still showing great pace. It was about handling the track better and he certainly did come the final.

“He’s a son of Kilmore Lemon, who was such a fast dog for Patrick (Janssens). Clearly that speed has been passed down and that was something at Yarmouth when Quagos Jack beat Kilmore Lemon’s track record in winning the big sprint there recently – at least he kept the record in the family.

“Well done to connections of Quagos Jack, a worthy winner of this year’s BetGoodwin Bedfordshire Sprint.”
