St Leger hero Droopys Clue crowned RPGTV/GWA Greyhound of the Month after track-record win
DROOPYS CLUE heads into Sunday’s Premier Greyhound Racing Kent Derby Final as the reigning RPGTV/GWA Greyhound of the Month having landed the award for September after his record-breaking victory in the Premier Greyhound Racing St Leger at Perry Barr.
Owned by Alex Hambi and Keylight Hire Ltd and trained by Hove-based Seamus Cahill, the brilliant young stayer completed an unbeaten run through the stayers’ Classic at the Birmingham track, the August 2021 son of Out Of Range ASB and Droopys Natalia setting a new track record for the 710m trip in the £20,000 final.
In being voted the RPGTV/GWA Greyhound of the Month for September, Droopys Clue edged out Brookside Richie (Jimmy Fenwick), Crafty Shivoo (Mark Wallis), Romeo Crusade (David Mullins), Queen Joni (Liz McNair) and his Yarmouth Derby-winning kennelmate Watch The Limo in what was another strong month.
Clive Lawrence, executive producer at award sponsors RPGTV, said: “Well done to Seamus and Teresa and their team – they really have a star on their hands. He’s definitely a Greyhound of the Year contender being already a big-race winner over four and six bends – even before his Kent Derby exploits.”
Perry Barr racing manager Martin Seal also paid tribute to Droopys Clue. He said: “To break the track record in any race is some achievement but to do that in the final of a Classic is definitely special and his performance on the night in the St Leger final is right up there with the best I’ve ever seen at the track.
“He’d run well at Monmore in the Summer Classic there, finishing a close second, but even so he was still a young stayer coming into the Leger against a top-class field and strong entry from Ireland, in particular. However, he never really looked in trouble and final night was tremendous for his owner Alex (Hambi) and a few pals who’d made the journey up.
“Fair play to Seamus (Cahill) for then dropping him in distance so successfully at Central Park to set another track record – and then do it again in the semis! Good luck to him and the team in the final, although seeing the line-up it will certainly not be easy.
“You tend to not look too far forward in this game, but we’d love to see Droopys Clue back here down the line – he’s definitely young enough to defend his Leger title next year. Fingers crossed.”
