BELLMORE SALLY has her sights set on another GBGB Category One title after posting the fastest time in the semi-finals of the George Ing St Leger at Yarmouth on Saturday.

Winner already of the Golden Jacket at Crayford, the Jimmy Fenwick-trained star was soon handy in the first semi-final behind pacesetter Affleck Macy (Patrick Janssens) but a back-straight challenge proved successful as the December 2019 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Bellmore Lucy rode a bump and held off a challenge from the staying-on Blueberry Bullet (Mark Wallis) to score by a length and a quarter in 41.14sec (-30).

The second semi-final saw fastest first-round winner Burgess Elite again produced the goods as John Mullins’ dog claimed the scalp of Essex Vase champion Coolavanny Aunty, but only after a terrific battle between the pair with the eventual winner scoring a neck victory over the Newcastle-based bitch in 41.34sec (-30).

The final two places for Saturday’s £7,500 final were decided in the third semi-final as another John Mullins-trained runner Callmesteve was soon pitching for the victory behind pace-setting Ragtime Storm (Dan Brabon) before finishing the stronger to win by a length from the Central Park raider in 41.34sec  (-30), the same time as his kennelmate.

Sam Freeman, Yarmouth’s assistant racing manager, said: “Overall it was an excellent evening’s racing with the three George Ing St Leger semi-finals the highlight.

“We had a really good crowd, both in the restaurant and stands, and the atmosphere was electric and lively, and the three semis produced some excellent racing and performances – not least in the first semi when Bellmore Sally and Blueberry Bullet served up a treat.

“The second semi was equally action-packed with Burgess Elite coming through to win. Blackrose Tadhg took up the running early before Coolavanny Aunty briefly nosed in front, Tadhg then came back at her, only for Burgess Elite to come round the outside and hit the front and win narrowly up the home straight from Aunty.

“The third semi was even more exciting with Callmesteve winning, albeit having to overcome crowding before getting to leader Ragtime Storm late on. Both are in the final on Saturday and it was great to have sponsor Jack Cranfield do the draw himself.

“We are set for a brilliant 2022 George Ing St Leger Final – good luck to connections of all the runners.”
