MAXIMUM SECURITY aims to right a wrong in next week’s final of the Gain Greyhound Nutrition 3 Steps To Victory at Sheffield after a fastest semi-final success at the Owlerton venue on Tuesday.

Withdrawn from last year’s 660m decider after winning his semi-final, the Nigel Saunders-trained April 2019 son of Sparta Maestro and Groupie Doll once again won his semi-final of the tri-distance event over 500m and will line up in Tuesday’s £10,000-to-the-winner six-bend contest in superb form, following up his victory in the 480m leg last week.

Racing to a 4.36sec sectional, Maximum Security used the inside line to edge the fast-starting pair of Nipsey Hustle (Carol Weatherall) and locally-trained Flying Ada (Kirsty Grayson) into the bend before stretching away to win by one and three-quarter lengths from the latter. The winning time was 28.42sec (+40).

Coolavanny Aunty has her sights set on another major title after winning the opening semi-final as Angela Harrison’s bitch, already a GBGB Category winner over four and six bends, once again showed the perfect mix of speed and stamina.

Winner of the Empress Stakes and Essex Vase, the September 2019 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Yahoo Katie was quickly away for a fastest-of-the-round 4.28sec sectional on her way to a one-and-three-quarter lengths success over new 480m track record holder Nolas Beauty (Sean Davy) in 28.66sec (+40).

Twice Lucky struck for Nottingham trainer Colin Wilton in the second semi after prevailing in a close finish with the always-handy Russian Sammy (David Elcock). The September 2019 daughter of Droopys Jet and Miss Pickpocket landed the spoils by half a length in 28.92sec (+40), the first two securing their place in Tuesday’s final.

Sean Traynor of big-race sponsors Gain Greyhound Nutrition is looking forward to next week’s 660m decider.

He said: “Once again it’s been a great competition this year and made even more special with the track record going in the 480m heats courtesy of Sean Davy’s Nolas Beauty.

“Coolavanny Aunty was my original pick before the start of the competition and I can’t see past her after her improvement in the semis and you’d think that Maximum Security inside her can ill-afford to miss the break as the race starts on the bend.

“Nolas Beauty has really come on after switching kennels to Sean Davy but I really don’t see her staying the trip and, while Russian Sammy will definitely stay the trip, I just can’t see him getting a run.

“Flying Ada will see out the 660m trip fully and, if there’s any trouble inside, will take full advantage of it, while Twice Lucky has performed above herself and has been a credit to his trainer Colin Wilton, but again I don’t see her staying the trip strong enough.

“However, we’ll see how it all unfolds, and thanks again to Sheffield for staging what remains the most unique competition in the greyhound calendar, being staged over three different distances.”
