Three Steps victory at Sheffield makes it fourth Cat One success for the impeccable Coolavanny Aunty and Angela Harrison
COOLAVANNY AUNTY plundered a brilliant fourth GBGB Category One title when making all in Tuesday’s Gain Greyhound Nutrition 3 Steps To Victory Final at Sheffield.
Trained by Angela Harrison for the Alnwick Greyhound Group, the September 2019 daughter of Droopys Sydney and Yahoo Katie was foot-perfect in the £10,000-to-the-winner decider of the unique tri-distance event, which sees heats over 480m, the semis over 500m and the final over 660m.
Well away and racing to a 12.82sec split, proven six-bend winner Coolavanny Aunty was never headed thereafter and kept up the gallop all the way to the wire, winning by three and a half lengths from Maximum Security (Nigel Saunders) in 38.78sec (+30), with Twice Lucky (Colin Wilton) crossing the line in third.
Victory for Coolavanny Aunty in the 3 Steps added to her other Category One successes in last year’s Empress Stakes at Towcester, plus wins this year in the Arc Grand Prix Final at Sunderland and Coral Essex Vase at Romford.
In addition, Coolavanny Aunty finished second in March’s George Ing St Leger at Yarmouth and last year’s Puppy Classic at Nottingham. Her victory at Sunderland in the Grand Prix also included a track record at the Wearside track in the semi-finals.
Andrew Mascarenhas, director of racing at Owlerton Stadium, said: “Once again, Coolavanny Aunty has proved herself a top-class performer and one of the best on the open-race scene, so well done to connections. She produced a strong front-running performance to take the title, justifying ante-post favouritism in the process.
“It was another great night here at Sheffield for Angela Harrison and her team, given her 280m track record holder Coolavanny Galiv had earlier shown his likeness for this circuit with a fine win, putting behind him two previous defeats here.
“Pick of the supporting card performances was Easy Cookie who was an impressive winner for Darren Fradgley over the 660m trip. She was making her debut over the staying distance, having previously won in a fastest time of the night on BresBet Steel City Final night here over 500m.
“Once again we had a busy restaurant on a Tuesday night here, with all of the finalists receiving a complimentary meal and finalist mementos provided by Burridge Trophies. As always, many thanks to Sean Traynor of Gain Greyhound Nutrition for his continued support of top-class open-race competitions here at Sheffield.”
