Maxine Locke tightened her grip on the Trainers’ Championship with another outstanding week, adding 72 points to become the first trainer to break through the 1,000-point barrier on 1,016.

While P W Young remains in pursuit on 850, the championship leader has stretched her advantage to 166 points and looks increasingly difficult to reel in.

The foundations for Locke’s latest surge were laid during a sensational Saturday night at Central Park, where her kennel dominated proceedings with four winners, headed by Annadown Warrior’s impressive success in the Kent Derby. It was a statement performance from the championship front-runner and one that further underlined the strength and depth behind her title challenge.

Standout performer

No trainer made a bigger statement this week than Richie Taberner. A sensational 94-point return propelled Taberner four places up the standings from 14th to 10th, with his total climbing to 387 points. In a week of significant movement throughout the table, Taberner’s charge was the standout performance, vaulting him into the top ten and adding fresh intrigue to the championship race.
