Trained by Carol Weatherall for the father and son team of John and Callum Purdy, the August 2022 son of Newinn Taylor and Glenegat Mildred went to traps the youngest runner in the field but defied that inexperience to lift the £20,000 first prize.

Nosing ahead of his rivals on the run to the first bend, the powerful running youngster – the fastest semi-final winner – always looked in pole position thereafter.

Riding a bump in between Droopys Eunice (Maxine Locke) inside and Omuircheartaigh (Tom Heilbron) outside, Untold Dollar negotiated the first two bends with a narrow advantage which he then consolidated on down the far side into the third bend.

Keeping up the pressure on those in behind with a searing gallop in a hot 480m contest, it was left to Barntick Bear (Patrick Janssens) to push the winner close.

Also an impressive and strong-running winner of his semi-final, Barntick Bear finished best to get within half a length of the 28.21sec (+10) winner, with Arc Northern Puppy Derby winner Clona Curly staying on well to grab third.

Formerly known as Newinn Bosco in Ireland where he was twice a winner from four starts at Clonmel for Graham Holland, including posting an eye-catching 28.51sec, Saturday’s race at Monmore proved a magnificent seventh run for the precocious Untold Dollar.

“He’s definitely one of the youngest pups to have won the Puppy Derby here and, like all of the finalists, has a really bright future,” said Tony Williamson, Monmore racing manager, who oversaw a gala matinee meeting at the Wolverhampton venue.

“You could see in the heats he had something about him. He didn’t get the clearest of runs but flew once in daylight and definitely caught the eye, so it wasn’t a huge surprise to see him dominate so well once he led early in the semi-finals.

“The final was always going to be more difficult given such a brilliant line-up and he’s had to run another different race if you like – but still won. That said, fair play to Patrick’s pup (Barntick Bear) who ran an exceptional race in behind.

“We’re delighted for Carol (Weatherall) and her team. Until recently her and Darren (Holmes) supplied graded runners here and their open racers are always welcome – you’d say they thoroughly deserve this big-race win and you could see how much it meant.”

Baywatch Bullet landed the supporting Jim Woods Memorial Trophy Final for Hove trainer Belinda Green and owners Billy Boyle, Danny Jones and Gary Whittington.

“It was the second time we’ve staged the race in memory of Jim (Woods), our former racing manager and my boss, who’s much missed here,” added Williamson.

He added: “Belinda won last year’s Premier Greyhound Racing Puppy Derby with Bradys Bullet and had another finalist this year in Getup Me Champ and her runners are always to be respected. Well done to her and the team – and to Baywatch Bullet.

“She’s a really well bred sort being a sister of both Jacktavern Magic, who was in the same final, and Savana Heross who ran over 900m on the same card on Saturday.

“I’d also like to mention a fantastic performance from Tom Heilbron’s Links Maverick on the supporting card.

“He was third in the Puppy Derby here last year before winning the (Ladbrokes) Gold Cup in the summer. He also reached this year’s Winter Derby final off the back of a long spell off, and ran well in the circumstances, so it was good to see him back in such great form.

“Winning in 27.96sec really was some run and he’s definitely back to his best.”
