Upcoming Change to GBGB Vaccination Requirements: Leptospirosis
Earlier this year, to support best biosecurity practice across the racing greyhound population and in response to the reduced availability of the ‘L2’ (Leptospirosis) vaccine across the UK, GBGB issued updated guidance for trainers and licensed racecourse vets. This stated that, where possible, greyhounds should begin to be transitioned from L2 to L4 vaccination.
New Requirement and Timeline
From 1st January 2027, GBGB will require proof of up-to-date core vaccinations plus L4 vaccination when registering a racing greyhound. The GBGB’s minimum vaccination requirements (Rule 60) will be amended to reflect this.
Ahead of this implementation date, all greyhounds currently vaccinated with L2 as part of their primary course and annual booster vaccinations should now begin their transition to L4 vaccination.
Transitioning Racing Greyhounds
For effective L4 immunity, as part of a primary course, two L4 doses must be given within the time interval specified by the manufacturer (typically three to four weeks apart), followed by an annual L4 booster.
As active racing greyhounds will already have L2 protection, their first L4 dose may be given when their annual Leptospirosis booster is due, followed by their second at the interval instructed by their veterinary surgeon and according to manufacturer’s guidelines.
Commenting on this change, GBGB Veterinary Director, Simon Gower, said:
“While rare, Leptospirosis is a serious infectious disease that can affect both dogs and humans, so it is vital that we offer our greyhounds the broadest possible protection.
“Many veterinarians are already opting to use the L4 vaccine, which protects against four Leptospira serovars rather than two. With the shift to L4 taking place nationwide, we expect that it will be increasingly difficult to source the L2 vaccine, so we strongly advise that trainers and track vets begin transitioning where they can ahead of the upcoming Rule change.
“From the beginning of 2027, all racing greyhounds must have completed the L4 primary vaccination course, with all new registrations and arrivals receiving this as standard.”
