Wallis eyes Premier Greyhound Racing Golden Jacket title after semi-final treble
MARK WALLIS holds all the aces in Saturday’s Premier Greyhound Racing Golden Jacket Final at Monmore after winning all three of the weekend’s semi-finals, including new track record-holder Mongys Wild, as the 15-time champion trainer eyes a third victory in the famous event.
A brace of wins at the competition’s former home Crayford hold pride of place in Wallis’s CV and he is hoping any of Mongys Wild, Bombay Nutty and Newinn Cloud can grab gold in the £20,000-to-the-winner decider.
“We had some great times at Crayford, winning the Golden Jacket twice and the Peter Bussey (Memorial Trophy) eight times, and we’ll never forget those times but Monmore is a great track and was the right choice to keep the event going. It’s always been a really popular competition and one everyone wants to win.
“We’ve got a great chance of doing that now, of course, but you never count your chickens. That said, I’m delighted where we’re at with our three. To be fair, all three could have easily gone to Towcester for the Derby, maybe not to win it but types to keep on qualifying. All three have good speed, especially Bombay Nutty and Newinn Cloud.
“Mongys Wild is just relentless and is looking to be a really special dog. He showed so much class and all-round pace in winning the (Time Greyhound Nutrition) TV Trophy but has dropped back down in distance quite easily. He’s a machine who winds up a challenge and just keeps going.
“His track record goes back to 2003, so while they might not have too many 684m races there, it’s still a long time for a track record to be broken. That shows you what a run it was and getting trap one in the final probably helps him keep out the way early.
“Bombay Nutty is a still a young stayer and hasn’t really looked back since winning for us on Trainers’ Judgement Night at Perry Barr, while Newinn Cloud is quite underrated in my opinion. I suppose he’s always been in the shadow of our New Destiny because they’ve generally run in the same types of races.
“All three are in good shape and we’re looking forward to another busy weekend. We’ve got five runners still in the Derby and four of them are racing on Friday – Table Toppers, Fabulous Sonique, Vhagar and Proper Heiress – with just Rackethall Brute running on Saturday, and we’ll be giving both our full attention!”
Wallis’s Mongys Wild heads into the Premier Greyhound Racing Golden Jacket Final as the red-hot favourite as the new track record holder after powering through and away from his rivals in the second semi-final, drawing ten and a half lengths clear of early leader Haka Carlo (Simon Deakin) in 40.54sec (normal).
The winning time was six spots inside Centaur Corker’s previous best in 2003.
Bombay Nutty was never far off the pace in the first semi and reeled in pace-setting Radical Scoby (Maxine Locke) before going on to score from that rival by three and three-quarter lengths in 40.93sec (normal) in a contest in which favourite New Destiny, another Wallis runner, bowed out in fourth place.
The third semi-final went to kennelmate Newinn Cloud who completed the Wallis treble, leading early and winning impressively by six and a half lengths from staying-on Magical Luna (Kim Billlingham-Hine) in 41.21sec (normal).
Trap draw for Saturday’s final: 1 Mongys Wild, 2 Magical Luna, 3 Haka Carlo, 4 Radical Scoby, 5 Newinn Cloud (m), 6 Bombay Nutty (m).
