WOLTEMADE is aiming to play his part in another major double-header after winning a third Category One success in the Ladbrokes Gold Cup at Monmore.

Already winner of the Arc Northern Puppy Derby and Time Northern Flat at home track Newcastle, Jimmy and Melanie Fenwick’s star completed an unbeaten run through the 480m annual at the Wolverhampton venue – and the target now is the Arena Racing Company Birmingham Cup at nearby Dunstall Park in a few weeks’ time.

That event will run alongside the Premier Greyhound Racing St Leger for another Category One gala and Woltemade will head to Wolverhampton Racecourse as the winningmost Category One performer in 2026 – and is a major reason why Newcastle trainer Fenwick is going well in the Trainer of the Year standings. He currently stands in fourth.

“We’re having a good year – and there’s no doubt Woltemade is playing his part,” said Fenwick, who named the Liam Dowling-bred and formerly trained May 2024 son of Ballymac Finn and Ballymac Minton after the Newcastle striker.

Breeding buffs will also note he is a half-brother of the another major Monmore winner at the weekend in Summer Stayers Classic winner Fortanach Col and Fenwick was quick to heap praise on the Kerry-based Irish and English Derby-winning owner and trainer and his son Shane.

“Liam and Shane’s record speaks for itself and they’re a pleasure to deal with, and I’m sure they enjoyed seeing the Monmore results come through while at Shelbourne on Saturday!

“As for Woltemade, he’ll have a short rest and then we’ll have a look at trailing him at Dunstall Park. He’s only ever raced at Monmore, Newcastle and Sheffield where he also made the Gymcrack final, finishing third. So given he’s not had that much racing but has still made four Cat One finals now we couldn’t be happier.”

Trapping well in the Monmore final, Woltemade was headed into the turn by Slingshot Poppy (Brian Fairbairn) but kept with his trackmate down the back for a thrilling tussle until steadily proved the stronger, pulling clear for a length and a half success over the keeping-on Grouchos Gregor (Kelly Wilton) in 28.00sec (+10) for the 480m trip.
